Instagram Tips & Tricks with @strawbrie Episode 1: All about hashtags

By | February 14, 2013

Hi, Brie here!

I’m going to be giving a few tips and answering a few common questions regarding the nail art community on Instagram. So… let’s get started!

What the heck are hash tags?

Hash tags gather groups of pictures together into categories.

e.g. Try searching the hash tag #nailart or #aussienails from the “Explore” page. You’ll see all the pictures on IG that have been hash tagged into that category! Cool right?!

Why should I use hash tags?

Using hash tags can increase the views and exposure your picture can get (expanding your picture’s “reach”), as it is seen by more people than just your followers. They can potentially get you more likes and followers. They’re also a great way to find new people with similar interests to follow and interact with!

Are there any rules for hash tagging?

Instagram only lets you hashtag your OWN photos and only hashtag your picture with 30 tags maximum. Any more than this and your comment won’t show up!

Hashtag Etiquette: Hash tagging pics to irrelevant tags is unnecessary, and hash bombing tags that are already “taken” is frowned upon. To see if a hash tag you want to create (yes you can create one) is taken, just type it into the search user/hash tag section of the “Explore” page. If it shows zero results, then no one’s used it before!

Which hash tags should I use?

Some popular hash tags in the nail art community are:

#aussienails #notd #nailart #nailartoftheday #nailstagram #nailsofinstagram #nailporn #nailswag #nails #mani

I like to use descriptive tags too, like #pink #sparkly #girly #cute

Bonus tip:

A good way to keep a track of hash tags you use is to write them in a “notes” application and copy/paste whenever you want to tag a pic.
