Indie Interviews: Mckfresh Nail Attire

By | April 20, 2013

Today we have an interview with the maker of Australia’s newest indie line, Kate from Mckfresh Nail Attire, which launched on Saturday with a 13-polish collection inspired by cult 80s film The Labyrinth, starring David Bowie.

Who are you?

I’m Kate. I live in Newcastle with my boyfriend and my dog, Jersey Squiggleface. I’m Commander in Chief of Sparkle Alchemy at indie nail polish line Mckfresh Nail Attire. The first collection launched on Etsy on the 20th April. I – like most polish addicts – like unique, pretty, sparkly things.

How did you first get into nail polish?

After starting to use Instagram and seeing all of the beautiful things people were doing, I decided to start trying to do complicated nail art. Being a nail biter, I realised that I would have to stop in order to give myself a bigger area to work with.

One year later, I have long, strong nails – the perfect canvas – but instead of spending hours painting them like I once did, I spend time in Glitter City, playing with glitters and pigments trying to make sparkly happiness in a bottle.

What inspired you to start your own line?

I love pretty things. I love nail polish. I’ve always had a feeling that I need to be creative, but up until I realised I could make nail polish – I had no idea what to funnel that creativity into.

I have always dabbled in different things – sticker making, cooking, sewing – I even recently began attempting to learn to play the ukulele. Until I found making polish, everything was just for fun, I never really stuck to it. Now I have realised I can have a business doing something I enjoy – hopefully giving people things they love in the process.

What is the inspiration for this line of polishes?

This is my first collection, I wanted to do it on something fun. I decided to base it on something that I loved as a child – something that is also (conveniently) extremely glittery.

The collection is based around characters and songs from The Labyrinth, a 1980’s fantasy film by Jim Henson (who created the muppets).

Where did the name ‘Mckfresh Nail Attire’ come from?

The name is a bit of a joke really – an old housemate and best friend of mine sometimes used to call me Mckfresh Attire… when I started tossing about the idea of having a polish business, my boyfriend suggested Mckfresh Nail Attire. It kind of stuck, now I love it!

(If anyone is wondering how it’s pronounced – it’s “Mc-Fresh”!)

What are (in your opinion) your best creations?

The Labyrinth Collection has 13 polishes in it – I love them all. I realise that is a bit of a cop out… so here are a few of the highlights – in my opinion.

As it is not the girliest of collections, I had to make sure that even the harder polishes to wrangle were still ‘ugly-pretty’. The ones that I found most difficult were Hoggle, Ludo and The Fireys. They took a lot more love and attention – subsequently turning out to be my favourite polishes from the collection.

As the World Falls Down has amazing depth – the holo glitters are amazing and sparkly. Sarah brings back fond memories of watching The Labyrinth as a kid and dreaming of dancing with David Bowie at a masquerade.

I have also been doing custom work of late, designing polishes for clients for gifts etc. I find that really enjoyable too – getting to think outside the box and come up with something we are both happy with, to fit their needs.

How do you come up with new polish ideas?

I am only just launching this collection… I am excited to see how things turn out! I have plans for my next collection in the works already – I don’t plan on resting on my laurels here – I am going to try to keep things fresh and new. I usually try brainstorm ideas about things I find beautiful or different/unique. Anything can be inspiration – film, music, landmark, friend.

What else do you like to do in your spare time (if you have any)?

I work full time, I have just started studying… I have a boyfriend and dog that I love spending time with, not to mention trying to catch up with friends and family when possible. It isn’t uncommon to find me at the pub of an afternoon with the boyfriend drinking ciders and playing Buck Hunter… which sometimes turns into vodkas and Karaoke.

I love travelling – I wish I made more money and got more time off so I could do more of it. I play silly iPhone games, paint my nails, ride my bicycle, see bands when I can.

What is the one tip you would give for perfect nails?

Tip for the perfect manicure? Cleanup. Finding out that ladies used a brush dipped in acetone to clean up around their cuticles changed my world. It seems so simple once you know how to do it – but the thought had never even crossed my mind. Having nice, clean, maintained cuticles makes all the difference.

What/who keeps you going?

I make polish because I want to make polish – I truly find it an enjoyable way to spend time.

In saying that, there are always setbacks when you do anything – using the wrong glitters on a batch of polish, postage delays and glitter order confusion – but I know I’ll get there in the end so I keep going and try not to get too stressed out.

I do have people helping me along the way too… my boyfriend has been amazing in helping me in many ways (screwing caps on bottles – he even built me a mixing machine for custom polishes), our dog Jersey is good company when spending hours mixing and pouring in Glitter City. I’ve also had different girls to bounce ideas off, both inside and outside of Aussie Nails. I have found a lot of people really willing to help and offer advice – it have been really amazing.

How can we get our hands on your polishes?

The best way to purchase the polishes would be to go to the Etsy store, which opened on 20th April, 2013.
